" Since 2016, the Aquarium de Paris has been taking in goldfish that private individuals can no longer look after: this is the goldfish refuge.
On the recommendation of its scientific advisory board, the Aquarium de Paris has withdrawn the term "refuge", which implies that the animals may be returned to private homes. The goldfish are now housed in the Rakuen area, which means rest and fulfillment in Japanese.
New regular residents
Not a week goes by without the Aquarium welcoming new fish. Individuals can drop off their pets every day between 10am and 12pm, 2pm and 4pm, preferably outside weekends, directly at the Aquarium reception desk. There, the animal is taken care of by teams of aquarium biologists, who advise the former owner on the care to be given to the fish. A goldfish transfer attestation form must also be completed. This is a regulatory obligation that cannot be waived. For this reason, the Aquarium cannot return the goldfish to a private individual. After 40 days' quarantine, the fish joins its fellow fish in the display tanks.
